Hughes was there along with fellow Harvard undergrads Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Dustin Moskovitz when Facebook was founded in 2004. Incidentally, Adpulp was founded a few months later that same year.<\/p>\n<p>Because Hughes knows Mark, he is critical of Mark&#8217;s choices and the unnatural powers afforded to him. Yesterday, Hughes announced a new $10 million, Anti-Monopoly Fund, to combat Facebook, and other monopolists in the battle for fairness, privacy, and democratic process.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AglC_CgqaAY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The fund is an initiative of Hughes\u2019 <a class=\"\" tabindex=\"\" title=\"\" role=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economicsecurityproject.org\/antimonopoly\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-type=\"\" aria-label=\"\">Economic Security Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Partners for the initiative include the Ford Foundation, Knight Foundation and George Soros-backed Open Society Foundations, among others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at a pivotal moment where cultural and political momentum is aligned to rein in the unchecked behavior of Big Tech,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/10\/17\/facebook-co-founder-chris-hughes-launches-anti-monopoly-fund.html\">Hughes said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Let\u2019s reclaim power over our politics and economy from corporations that use their influence to create a system that works in their favor. While emphasizing his belief that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has good intentions overall, he said the executive has far too much unchecked power, aided by his majority voting stake in the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most problematic aspect of Facebook\u2019s power is Mark\u2019s unilateral control over speech,\u201d Hughes wrote. \u201cThere is no precedent for his ability to monitor, organize and even censor the conversations of two billion people.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/17\/business\/zuckerberg-facebook-free-speech.html\">A Defiant Mark Speaks Freely in D.C.<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Mark made a speech yesterday.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a winding, 35-minute speech at Georgetown University\u2019s Gaston Hall, Mark fought back against the idea that his social network needs to be an arbiter of speech. He said that Facebook was founded to give people a voice and bring them together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople having the power to express themselves at scale is a new kind of force in the world \u2014 a Fifth Estate alongside the other power structures of society,\u201d Mr. Zuckerberg, 35, said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Did he just claim to be the inventor of the Fifth Estate? That would be the estate beyond the Fourth Estate, also known as the free press.<\/p>\n<p>Mark added that despite the messiness of free speech, \u201cthe long journey towards greater progress requires confronting ideas that challenge us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to hear he&#8217;s on the challenger page, because I, along with millions of others, openly challenge Mark to make better decisions going forward.<\/p>\n<h2>Mark Cozies Up to Conservatives<\/h2>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2019\/10\/14\/facebook-zuckerberg-conservatives-private-meetings-046663\">Politico<\/a>, last July, Mark started hosting &#8220;informal talks and small, off-the-record dinners with conservative journalists, commentators and at least one Republican lawmaker in recent months to talk about issues like free speech and discuss partnerships.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discussion in Silicon Valley is that Mark is very concerned about the Justice Department, under Bill Barr, bringing an enforcement action to break up the company,\u201d said one cybersecurity researcher and former government official based in Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see Barr doing the right thing here.
