The WNBA 2020 season will include a devoted platform led by the players that will aim to support and strengthen both the league and teams\u2019 reach and impact on social justice matters.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nUOhmINjLKEe?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe WNBA opposes racism in all its forms, and George Floyd and Breonna Taylor are the latest names in a list of countless others who have been subject to police brutality that stems from the systemic oppression of Black Lives in America, and it is our collective responsibility to use our platforms to enact change,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnba.com\/news\/wnba-announces-plan-to-tip-off-2020-season\/\">said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">To show its support, WNBA players will wear uniforms for the opening weekend of the season featuring Breonna Taylor\u2019s name. Players will also wear warmup shirts that read \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d on the front and \u201cSay Her Name\u201d on the back throughout the season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p>Taylor, a 26-year-old Black emergency medical technician, was shot eight times by plainclothes Louisville police officers serving a narcotics search warrant at her apartment on March 13.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry__content-body\">\n<h2>The Whine of a Trumpian Lapdog<\/h2>\n<p>Georgia&#8217;s Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, co-owner of the WNBA&#8217;s Atlanta Dream, says she&#8217;s &#8220;All About Georgia&#8221; in her latest campaign commercial.<\/p>\n<p>She fails to identify which Georgia she&#8217;s referring to, but since she is a Trumpian lapdog, it&#8217;s clear that she&#8217;s talking about pre-civil rights era Georgia. The time before Martin Luther King uttered his famous words, &#8220;I have a dream.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZX1Q7xTPkVA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To make matters much worse for the Senator, she recently asked WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to back down on the league and its players\u2019 union\u2019s plan to have players wear warmup shirts and jerseys in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, we need less \u2014 not more politics in sports,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/07\/15\/891368999\/gop-senator-on-defense-as-wnba-team-she-co-owns-embraces-black-lives-matter\">said Loeffler<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabe.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Loeffler-WNBA-Letter-7.7.20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> in a letter to Engelbert.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Loeffler, who purchased the team in 2011, argued that while \u201cthe lives of each and every African American matter,\u201d the political Black Lives Matter movement is \u201ctotally misaligned with the values and goals of the WNBA and the Atlanta Dream, where we support tolerance and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Naturally, no one inside the WNBA agrees with her political stunt or her archaic positions.
