Does it matter? <em>Yes and yes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For professional writers, there is the literary market, the entertainment market, the journalism market, and the advertising market. When you work in advertising, all of the sister industries are part of the big picture. When you go to bat for a brand, you rely on the same narrative structures that novelists use, you write dialogue like a screenwriter, and you tell long-form brand-sponsored stories in print and broadcast, like a journalist.\u2028\u2028 You will also want to pack your sentences with the power of poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Poems, like ads, utilize dense language to convey big ideas quickly and memorably. For instance, here&#8217;s a new poem from copywriter Jim Mitchem in Charlotte, NC.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">56, a poem<\/p>\n<p>The world says I\u2019m too old.<br \/>\nTo think.<br \/>\nTo hustle.<br \/>\nTo fuck.<br \/>\nBut the truth is, I\u2019m mostly muscle.<br \/>\nMy aim is true.<br \/>\nMy brain unstuck.<br \/>\nAnd one day,<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re lucky,<br \/>\nYou\u2019ll finally come to see,<br \/>\nHow with age comes wisdom<br \/>\nAnd what it\u2019s like<br \/>\nTo be me. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kzdjeTtYZh\">pic.twitter.com\/kzdjeTtYZh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jim Mitchem ? Let&#8217;s give the poet the last word.<\/p>\n<h2>Talented Writers Can Learn To Make Ads Sing<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an excellent poem by aspiring copywriter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikkygary.com\">Nikki Gary<\/a>, a recent graduate in advertising from the University of Illinois and an emerging <a href=\"https:\/\/adpulp.wpengine.com\/category\/emerging-voices\/\">Emerging Voice<\/a> on Adpulp.com.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>kentucky<\/strong><br \/>\nmetal floor bobbing<br \/>\nforward along a blue space<br \/>\nthat never seems to end.<\/p>\n<p>they all fit between the invisible<br \/>\nwalls of what kept them afloat,<br \/>\ntoo young to be drunk and too<\/p>\n<p>old? too old to ignore the fact<br \/>\nthat this would end one day.<br \/>\nsmall square grass patch<\/p>\n<p>along the river kept inside<br \/>\ncartoon character fishing<br \/>\npoles, eight french braids,<br \/>\nand under the sycamore, big belly laughs.<br \/>\nthe kind that make the house shake.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I also like some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nikkygary.com\/creative-work\/peets-coffee\">the work in Nikki&#8217;s spec book<\/a>. I like this poem even more. If I had the capacity to hire her on the strength of this poem alone, I would.<\/p>\n<h2>A Fragment of My Verse<\/h2>\n<p>I also write poems. I wrote this one recently.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Before the Birds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up before the birds<br \/>\nIn the milking hour<br \/>\nQuiet night free hand<br \/>\nPoems like rocks fall<br \/>\nFrom the boulders that roll me<br \/>\nOver in my sleep<\/p>\n<p>A poem is not a poem<br \/>\nUnpolished<br \/>\nFirst, you hold the piece<br \/>\nYou feel its heft, it\u2019s pull and pulse<br \/>\nYou weigh tossing the pebble<br \/>\nYou want to give it<br \/>\nBack to the river<br \/>\nBack to the night<\/p>\n<p>Do you think a poem<br \/>\nIs a fragile thing?<br \/>\nA literary object<br \/>\nUnder glass?<br \/>\nWords like wings<br \/>\nLift the burdens of sorrow<br \/>\nIn the poem, we rise<\/p>\n<p>The composer\u2019s notes<br \/>\nAre incomprehensible<br \/>\nOn the page<br \/>\nThe composer\u2019s music moves<br \/>\nPeople in waves<br \/>\nRhythmic, steady<br \/>\nForever<\/p>\n<p>Here you have truth<br \/>\nGrenades for the fibs<br \/>\nYou tell yourself<br \/>\nSomething stronger for the lies<br \/>\nYou are told<br \/>\nBoom bah<br \/>\nBoom bah<br \/>\nThere was nothing<br \/>\nNow there is something<\/p>\n<p>Pieces put together<br \/>\nUniversal order<br \/>\nStars beam bright<br \/>\nDebris fields become<br \/>\nFields of inquiry<br \/>\nFields of golden maize<br \/>\nOn our plate<br \/>\nParticles<br \/>\nGathered appetites fed<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What does this have to do with advertising? Poems don&#8217;t sell! Poetry is a non-transactional media. Instead, poems make you feel and think. Because of this, today&#8217;s ad makers and brand builders have much to learn from poetry and poets.<\/p>\n<p>Writers and artists add beauty, truth, and meaning to the world.
