{"id":37619,"date":"2022-08-25T11:12:25","date_gmt":"2022-08-25T16:12:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adpulp.com\/?p=37619"},"modified":"2022-08-25T11:12:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T16:12:25","slug":"long-live-the-indie-bookstore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adpulp.com\/long-live-the-indie-bookstore\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Live the Indie Bookstore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a former English major, professional writer, and fan of books, I was happy to read in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/10\/books\/bookstores-diversity-pandemic.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em> that &#8220;small booksellers <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/12\/books\/bookstores-reopening-coronavirus.html\">not only survived<\/a> the pandemic, but many are thriving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 new independent bookstores have sprouted across the United States in the past couple of years. Given how bookstore sales <a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/bookselling\/article\/85593-bookstore-sales-fell-28-3-in-2020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fell nearly 30 percent in 2020<\/a>, things could have turned out differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of shocking when you think about what dire straits the stores were in in 2020,\u201d said Allison Hill, the chief executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookweb.org\/\">American Booksellers Association<\/a>, a trade organization for independent bookstores.<\/p>\n<h2>Highly Curated for the Retail Win<\/h2>\n<p>Best-selling writer <a href=\"https:\/\/ryanholiday.medium.com\/this-is-the-best-career-decision-you-can-possibly-make-344bbc181e94\">Ryan Holiday<\/a>, author of <em>Ego Is the Enemy, Discipline Is Destiny<\/em>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/books\/trust-me-i-m-lying-confessions-of-a-media-manipulator\/9781591846284\"><em>Trust Me, I&#8217;m Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator <\/em><\/a>recently wrote about the opening of his bookstore in Bastrop, Texas, 30 miles southeast of Austin.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When my wife and I <a class=\"au lu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/arts-entertainment\/opening-small-town-bookstore-pandemic-craziest-thing-we-ever-did\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">decided to open a bookstore<\/a>, I bought a course from a bookstore consultant. One of the first things they told me was we\u2019d have to carry at least 10,000 titles. That\u2019s what the average indie bookstore carries. It was, as far as I could tell, an unques\u00adtioned assumption in the business.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the first thing we did was the opposite of that. At the <a class=\"au lu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaintedporch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Painted Porch<\/a>, we carry roughly 600 titles. The vast majority of them are not new, or even particularly famous. But they are books we have loved over the years.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the best decisions we made\u2013both personally and professionally. Not only did this make it cheaper and easier to run the bookstore, it makes us stand out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I live in Bastrop and shop at Holiday&#8217;s store. He takes curated to a new &#8220;less is more&#8221; place with 600 titles. He also reserves prime real estate for his own books, and books by friends and guests on his podcast. Not all writers embrace <a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/i-really-didnt-want-to-write-this-promotional-essay-tied-to-my-book-release\/?fbclid=IwAR3-ijs4K5Sl7y_v-JQ-wpOBGX4NvHYlIj1STmmcePkvLmv5zVyb1_EojcI\">the need to promote their work<\/a> and the work of others. Orders are processed through wholesalers, so stores don\u2019t need to manage extensive inventory to offer a wide selection and convenient shipping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of what you hear about Silicon Valley culture is about disrupting an industry. What if we use the same tools some might use to disrupt an industry to actually reinforce it?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/stripe.com\/newsroom\/stories\/bookshop-and-stripe\">said<\/a> Andy Hunter, founder and CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/bookshop.org\">Bookshop.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rp9Y9L7Bjj8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bookshop.org is a certified B Corp and gives 80% of its profits to independent bookstores, generating more than $21 million in revenue for the more than 1,500 booksellers on its platform.<\/p>\n<p>The website now has more than 50,000 affiliates\u2014including <em>The Atlantic<\/em>, <em>Buzzfeed<\/em>, <em>The New York Times<\/em>, <em>The New York Review of Books<\/em>, and <em>New York Magazine<\/em>\u2014that link to it through book reviews or other coverage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a former English major, professional writer, and fan of books, I was happy to read in The New York Times that &#8220;small booksellers not only survived the pandemic, but many are thriving.&#8221; More than 300 new independent bookstores have sprouted across the United States in the past couple of years.
