Seems like an innocent enough idea. Yet, the feel-good Team USA commercial where this idea is unveiled is receiving some blowback.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s watch the spot, which features one of America&#8217;s track &amp; field superstars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sydneymclaughlin16\/?hl=en\">Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone<\/a>, a helpful and caring father, and a cute little girl.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NgtHJKn0Mck?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The father prompts Google Gemini to help write McLaughlin-Levrone a note on his daughter\u2019s behalf. &#8220;I&#8217;m pretty good with words, but this has to be just right,&#8221; the dad says. Because the bar is set so high, he seeks &#8220;a little help.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to an article by <span class=\"author-content\">Grace Snelling<\/span> in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91165183\/googles-gemini-ai-ad-olympi\">Fast Company<\/a>, <\/em>the &#8220;ad that affects sincerity while seemingly suggesting that a child\u2019s creativity should be replaced with words from an AI program&#8230;and major companies like Google have yet to grasp how public hesitance around increasingly powerful technology will impact the reception of ads like &#8216;Dear Sydney.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>What Do Viewers Think?<\/h3>\n<p>WTOP News in Washington, DC asked its viewers to respond to the ad. &#8220;I struggled with that commercial,&#8221; one man said. &#8220;Some things are just fundamental, and being able to speak and write and think and convey your messages is absolutely critical.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tnMSCfbgKJc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another man saw it as an opportunity to educate on the new tools.\u00a0&#8220;The whole idea is to teach people how to use the tools and not pretend that the machine knows best. It&#8217;s you who knows best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to AI, knowing what&#8217;s best is also an environmental imperative.
