Who knew that you could <strong>Just Ask Google<\/strong> and go? In this pixelated dreamworld, there&#8217;s no need for school or teachers, for books or libraries, for apprenticeships or years of hard-earned preparation.<\/p>\n<p>How&#8217;s this for a brand promise? With a phone and Google in your pocket, you can skip the line, and the more lines you skip, the more likely it is you&#8217;ll be able to enjoy a leisurely and meaningful existence.<\/p>\n<h3>Ted&#8217;s Tall Tale<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/386Cw1vKOfI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even with a scripted happy ending, there&#8217;s something dystopian about a person ruled by his search queries.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Landymore of <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/google-ad-slopper\"><em>Futurism<\/em><\/a>, for one, is not impressed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a particularly bonkers entry, the premise appears to be that, if you give over decision-making in your personal life to the hands of a large language model owned by a multi-trillion dollar company \u2014\u00a0there&#8217;s now a <a class=\"underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/sloppers-ask-ai-everything\">disparaging term for such folks<\/a>: &#8220;sloppers&#8221; \u2014\u00a0 even a loser such as thee can find true love.<\/p>\n<p>We wish we were kidding&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The oversimplification in this campaign is over the top. Is Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/news-and-insights\/cambridge-dictionary-adds-skibidi-delulu-and-tradwife\">delulu<\/a>? Answers returned by search engines are not omniscient. They&#8217;re bits of mostly useful information that we pay for with our privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Be that as it may, there are scores of good reasons to query the machines, and just as many reasons to question the data returned.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a question that no machine wants to answer: Can we continue to rely on our innate and uniquely human problem-solving abilities (and each other) to guide the way?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When life presents challenges or opportunities, we ask questions (and hope for factual and detailed answers).
